Ask the Doc: Could IBS be celiac?

questionmarkgreen.jpgQ. I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Is it possible that I could actually have Celiac Disease?

A. Most certainly. Studies have shown that about 30% of patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS, and a significant, but lesser percentage who have constipation, bloating, pain and alternating forms actually have Celiac Disease. There are many celiacs in my practice who came to see me because their “IBS” was not responding to any treatment, but have made complete recoveries when diagnosed and placed on a gluten-free diet.

  1. I have been dealing with IBS for about 9 or so years and tested negative for Celiac (blood test) a number of years ago. After trying everything under the sun for my IBS-D I finally decided to give a Gluten-Free diet a try just to finally rule it out. I did this on Tues Sept 4th 2012, or, 10 days ago. After 2-3 days I noticed an amazing improvement (not to be confused with “completley cured”). That being said I did not wnat to get overconfident as sometimes the placebo effect of wanting a treatment to work comes into play. Well, 10 days into my diet I am still noticing marked improvement. i ahve been reading about withdrawal/recovery symptoms and believe myself to be going through those right now. Namely bouts of being really hot then really cold, cold symptoms that only lasted a day, some fatigue, and now a cold sore. Of course all fo this pales in comparison to what i believe is a rebirth and taking back of my life as nothing has ever worked so well. I am now of the belief that I do not have IBS-D but instead am either Celiac or just Gluten Sensitive/intolerant. WOW! Ia m really in disbelief as to how good I feel and hope that as the days wear on I feel better and better. And of course, I wanted to share this experience with people who might benefit. Thanks!
