Gluten-free fig cookies – new from Pamela’s! Enter to win!

Posted on March 4th, 2014 by Alison | Posted in Giveaways, Products | Read 150 Comments - Add Your Own »

Did you grow up eating Fig Newtons? I did. They are one of those nostalgic cookies for me, like Nutter Butters and Circus Animal Cookies. I never did look at the ingredients panel until recently, and… yuck. Besides the fact that Fig Newtons are gluten-ous, they also contain high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, soybean oil (GMO) and partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil. Not what I want to be putting in my body or my children’s bodies!

But I have exciting news! Pamela’s Products has created a gluten-free version of fig cookies that is better-tasting and healthier than the original. They are called Figgies & Jammies and come in four flavors: Blueberry & Fig, Mission Fig, Strawberry & Fig, and Raspberry & Fig. If you miss the taste of those good ol’ fig cookies because you are now gluten-free, or if you want better ingredients, you will be happy to have these.Pamela's Figgies & Jammies

I like these cookies much better than the original — they are soft and full of flavor. And, they have no corn syrup, no artificial flavors or additives, and no hydrogenated oils or trans fats. I tested them on my kids, who have never had a Fig Newton in their lives and think the concept of fig in a cookie is disgusting… and they loved them! They will make a great lunchbox or after-school treat.

FIGGIES & JAMMIES GIVEAWAY!
They are not yet on store shelves, but will be soon. In the meantime, would you like to be one of the first to try them? Pamela’s has agreed to give away the new Figgies & Jammies to three of my lucky readers! All you have to do is make a comment on this post answering the following two questions:

  • What type of cookie was your childhood favorite?
  • Which TWO flavors of Figgies & Jammies would you like to win? (Yes, you will win two packages of cookies!)

Contest will remain open until March 12, 2014 at 5:00 PST (I extended it). You may add extra comments for extra chances to win, telling me you shared the contest on Facebook or Twitter. Three winners will be randomly selected and I will contact you via email. Good luck!

Lifefactory Bottles 16 oz.If you don’t have a Lifefactory glass water bottle by now, you really need to get one! About a year ago I did a giveaway of these bottles when they were brand-new and nobody had even seen them before. Now, a year later, I am seeing them everywhere! Why? Here are some reasons:

  • They look cool. Who knew a bottle could be so stylish?
  • They make things taste good — well, they make things taste like they are supposed to taste, without a plastic or metal flavor added.
  • They are made from quality, safe ingredients. It really does matter what you put in your body (hopefully you know that already!)
  • They get clean! Seriously, I have been using the same kid bottles now for 3 years and my big ones for over a year and they all look brand new.
  • They come in a variety of sizes: small 4 oz and 9 oz for babies and kids, medium 16 oz (new this year) and large 22 oz for adults.
  • They look cool — oh, did I already say that?

win-stuff-wednesday1And now, what you’ve been waiting for… the giveaway. My husband (who works for Lifefactory) has authorized me to give away 3 bottles. Oh, what the heck, I’m sure he’ll let me give away 4. Let’s do 4! To enter to win, please leave a comment (one per person) with the size you choose (either 16 oz or 22 oz) and the color you want. Now this is tricky — the 16 oz has some different color options than the 22 oz, so pay attention:

  • Lifefactory Bottles 22 ozThe medium 16 oz colors are: Raspberry, Spring Green, Pearl White,Turquoise, Royal Purple, and Graphite (see picture at top of post)
  • The large 22 oz colors are: Red, Orange, Spring Green, Pearl White, Sky Blue and Midnight Blue (see picture to right). Matching color caps are new this year!

Jovial gluten-free pasta (Win Stuff Wednesday!)

Posted on March 30th, 2011 by Alison | Posted in Giveaways, Products, Win Stuff Wednesdays | Read 30 Comments - Add Your Own »

There is a new gluten-free pasta on the market called Jovial.

jovial-gluten-free-pasta

Imported from Italy, the brown rice pasta is 100% organic, made from rice grown in Italy. I am so excited about this pasta! It not only tastes great, but it has a wonderful texture. It doesn’t get sticky or starchy or crumbly like other gluten-free pastas, and it truly has an al dente bite to it if you want it to.

Their website tells a great story:
“Jovial gluten free products were developed out of a heartfelt compassion for all of us who have had a food intolerance critically effect personal health and wellness. We believe eating gluten free should be pleasurable and not feel like a sacrifice. It is not that products formulated without gluten can’t taste great; it’s how relentless you are in developing them.”

From their packages:
“Jovial Brown Rice Pasta is as close to traditional pasta as possible because it’s made in Tuscany by master artisans who have been crafting pasta for over a century. It is pressed with bronze dies and dried at low temperatures for the most authentic flavor.”

jovial_brownrice_caserecceAllergen info:
“Jovial brown rice pasta is certified by the Gluten Intolerance Group at a level less than 10PPM. This product is made in a dedicated facility free of gluten, casein, eggs, tree nuts and peanuts, but may contain traces of soy.”

The pasta comes in five shapes: spaghetti, capellini, penne rigate, fusilli and caserecce (pictured at right). The biggest problem may be finding it, but I suspect that will change as more and more people demand this product — ask your natural foods store if they can get it. And be careful — Jovial also makes an einkorn pasta, which is NOT gluten-free. The brown rice pasta comes in green and white boxes.

win-stuff-wednesday1Want to win some gluten-free pasta? Leave a comment about which shape of Jovial pasta you would choose if you won and your favorite way to prepare or eat it — we can all inspire each other with some new ideas! You can even link to a recipe that you created or that you like. There will be SIX winners who will receive, courtesy of Jovial jovial-fig-cookiesFoods, a box of pasta and a bonus prize of a box of Jovial gluten-free Fig Fruit Filled Cookies. Contest ends Friday, April 1 at midnight PST.

30 Days to a Food Revolution

Posted on April 27th, 2010 by Alison | Posted in Blog Events, Giveaways, Healthy Living, Recipes & Cooking Tips | ADD A COMMENT »

icookrealfoodI hope that many of you got a chance to watch Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. I found the T.V. series so inspiring, and like Jamie (otherwise known as the Naked Chef for his use of honest, real food) said: “Yes, this is a T.V. show, but it’s real life.”

He succeeded in making change in the school lunch program in a town chosen for its high rate of obesity. His mission — OUR mission — is so important: feed our kids well so that they can live healthy lives. Of course, there needs to be change not only in our lunch programs, but throughout our society. This change won’t come about easily, as we need education, dedication, motivation and of course, money. But it CAN be done and we need to try.

Many bloggers (including me!) are hoping to make a small difference by sharing tips and recipes for cooking real food in 30 Days to a Food Revolution, an online event dreamed up and organized by Diane of The W.H.O.L.E. Gang.

For 30 days, there will be 30 different food bloggers sharing 30 different ways to eat real food.

Less processed food, more real food is the goal! Most of us are living gluten-free or with other special diets, so hopefully you will find a wealth of good stuff to use in your own kitchens, and discover new blogs too.

I will be contributing my tip and recipe on May 4. In the meantime, you can follow these  participating blogs:

There are also prizes to win! Go to the 30 Days to a Food Revolution page to see the details about how to enter.

WIN the coolest glass beverage bottle from Lifefactory!

Posted on March 22nd, 2010 by Alison | Posted in Giveaways, Healthy Living, Products | Read 115 Comments - Add Your Own »

bottlesbeverageI am so excited to tell everyone about the new glass beverage bottles from Lifefactory, and do a giveaway to THREE lucky readers! I have been using one of the bottles (the orange one) for the past few months now and I LOVE it. I was privileged to get one before they were available to the public because (disclosure alert!) my husband works for Lifefactory, and I demanded that I have one!

So, let me tell you about these and why you’re going to want one…

In case you missed it, they are GLASS. Yes, glass. You are most likely currently drinking out of a plastic (need I say it?) or a metal (that tastes like metal) water bottle. Besides the great environmental and health reasons why this new bottle is a necessity, the #1 reason I like this bottle is TASTE. My water tastes like water! I would never choose to drink from plastic or metal at home, and now I get to drink from glass when I am in my car, taking a water break from a volleyball game, hanging out at the park with my kids, or attending an all-day conference. I also love that the bottle has a wide mouth so I can easily drop ice cubes in. (I hurt my hand trying to whack ice cubes into my old metal drinking container.)

You might still be wondering how a glass bottle is going to make it to all of these things without breaking. The bottle has a non-toxic tight-fitting silicone sleeve that protects it from breaking, and also gives you a good grip on the bottle. The sleeves are brightly colored with a cool, modern design. My bottle attracts attention wherever I go! You don’t need to take the sleeves off of the bottles — just put the whole thing in the dishwasher. My daughters have been using the Lifefactory baby bottles as water bottles (with caps instead of nipples) every day in their lunches to school for about two years now, and they still look brand new (and they haven’t broken them).

To win a 22 ounce glass beverage bottle from Lifefactory, please leave a comment choosing which color you would want. The colors are: Midnight Blue, Orange, Pearl White, Red, Sky Blue, and Spring Green. I will choose THREE winners at random. You have until Friday, March 26 at 5pm PST to comment (only one comment per person please). I will notify the winners on Saturday.

For those of you who don’t win, or would like to purchase more bottles, you can get 15% off the Lifefactory online store by using the discount code: go glass (with a space).

GOOD LUCK!
