Always read ingredients and check with the manufacturer if you are not sure if something contains soy, and avoid the food until you are sure.

Foods that definitely are or contain soy:

  • Soybeans
  • Edamame
  • Soy Sauce, Shoyu Sauce, Tamari
  • Tofu/bean curd
  • Tempeh
  • Miso
  • Natto
  • Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)
  • Anything with the word “soy” in it (ex. soy nuts, soy flour, soy crisps, soymilk, soy protein concentrate, soy protein isolate)

Ingredients that may contain soy:

  • Natural and artificial flavorings
  • Hydrolyzed plant protein
  • Hydrolyzed vegetable protein
  • Vegetable broth
  • Vegetable gum
  • Vegetable starch

Things to watch out for:

  • Meat substitutes are usually made of soy
  • Commercially prepared meats may use soy
  • Cheese substitutes are usually made of soy
  • Margarine or other butter alternatives usually contain soy
  • Asian food – almost always use soy sauce
  • Baby formula – soy-based
  • Baked goods and crackers – some may use soy flour
  • Salad dressings and mayonnaise – some made with soybean oil
  • Shortening or vegetable oil – usually made with soybean oil
  • Protein bars

Note: Studies have shown that most soy allergic individuals may safely eat soy lecithin and soy oil (that is not cold pressed, expeller pressed, or extruded oil). Please work with a doctor to determine whether this applies to you.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA), mandates that foods labeled on or after January 2006 must declare soy in plain language either on the ingredient list or by using the word “Contains” followed by the name of the major food allergen.
