Did you grow up eating Fig Newtons? I did. They are one of those nostalgic cookies for me, like Nutter Butters and Circus Animal Cookies. I never did look at the ingredients panel until recently, and… yuck. Besides the fact that Fig Newtons are gluten-ous, they also contain high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, soybean oil (GMO) and partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil. Not what I want to be putting in my body or my children’s bodies!
But I have exciting news! Pamela’s Products has created a gluten-free version of fig cookies that is better-tasting and healthier than the original. They are called Figgies & Jammies and come in four flavors:Â Blueberry & Fig, Mission Fig, Strawberry & Fig, and Raspberry & Fig. If you miss the taste of those good ol’ fig cookies because you are now gluten-free, or if you want better ingredients, you will be happy to have these.
I like these cookies much better than the original — they are soft and full of flavor. And, they have no corn syrup, no artificial flavors or additives, and no hydrogenated oils or trans fats. I tested them on my kids, who have never had a Fig Newton in their lives and think the concept of fig in a cookie is disgusting… and they loved them! They will make a great lunchbox or after-school treat.
FIGGIES & JAMMIES GIVEAWAY!
They are not yet on store shelves, but will be soon. In the meantime, would you like to be one of the first to try them? Pamela’s has agreed to give away the new Figgies & Jammies to three of my lucky readers! All you have to do is make a comment on this post answering the following two questions:
- What type of cookie was your childhood favorite?
- Which TWO flavors of Figgies & Jammies would you like to win? (Yes, you will win two packages of cookies!)
Contest will remain open until March 12, 2014 at 5:00 PST (I extended it). You may add extra comments for extra chances to win, telling me you shared the contest on Facebook or Twitter. Three winners will be randomly selected and I will contact you via email. Good luck!

I was very fortunate to have a mother who baked and baked and baked. We lived on a farm and only went to town for staples (flour, sugar etc.) so store bought was not an option. We raised our own beef and had a huge garden. My favorite cookie were her snowballs that she made at Christmas. In fact every time I see them happy memories galore. Fast forward and I miss fig newtons since going gluten free. I’d love to try the fig which is my favorite and blueberry takes a second.

Oh, I had lots of favorites…peanut butter cookies made by the baby nurse my mother hired when each of my three brothers was born; Fig Newtons, Oreos, among others.
When I was at the store the other day, I was thinking, “When will someone make a gluten free fig cookie!” I would love the Mission Fig and the Raspberry.

Oh my goodness! I’ve always said that we need a good gluten-free fig newton! There’s one out there on the market that is decent (but not much fig filling – too much dough). I trust Pamela’s to make a great one! Newman’s makes a wheat free one but it’s not safe for Celiacs.
A favorite cookie from my childhood was a Garibaldi – I’m a fan of the sweet fruity cookies and those have currants in them.
I love straight fig newtons – so would go with the Mission Fig and probably the Raspberry & Fig as a second choice.

I grew up eating Fig Newtons despite hating figs. I grew up eating them at my grandma’s house every day I would walk to her house. We sat at her red 1950s style dining table, and ate Fig Newtons with a small cup of milk. When we finished, we usually watched Gone with the Wind on her VCR while I played with her Tinker Toys, which was actually my dad’s set from childhood. Fig Newtons are the ultimate comfort food for me, because they remind me of my grandmother, who I was very close to, and I lost her about nine years ago, it would mean a lot to get to try these, since I have a gluten sensitivity.
Milissa says
By the way, I would be happy for just two packages of the fig!

My favorite cookies growing up were my grandmothers Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies and my mom’s Sugar cookies. I used to love Fig Newtons but they’re laced ingredients I won’t put in my body. I’m no longer able to eat gluten and it would be fabulous to be able to try Figgies & Jam especially the Raspberry & Blueberry.

I also enjoyed the Fig Newtons. I was just mentioning to a friend that I would really like a GF Fig Newton, but I was just too lazy to make one myself.
If I am lucky enough to be selected, I would love to try the raspberry and strawberry varieties.

I have always been spoiled. In my life before I had to be gluten free and in my life now, my absolute favorite cookie was the one my mom was making at the time. She is always trying new recipes and coming up with delectable new dreamy bites. As a kid, though, my favorite was her white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies….
I have to say though… When I had to go gluten free one of the things I missed the most… And continue to miss terribly…. Are fig newtons. I LOVED them! I am SOOOO excited to see that Pamela has made some. I adore her products. My whole family does. They keep me going and they constantly give me a little piece of home, despite being far far away from it. Thank you Pamela for all that you do and for the hard work you’ve put in to being readily available over so much of the country. You have made the GF world so much easier to manage!

My favorite childhood cookie was the Keebler Fudge Stripe cookies since they could be dipped in milk to soften a bit but still held together since the bottoms were coated in chocolaty goodness. Wow, that takes me back. I tried the Blueberry & Fig variety at the Natural Food Expo in Anaheim this past weekend and thought it was amazing! I’m also a purist so a clean Mission Fig Figgie & Jammie sounds delicious, too. Gonna share this in Facebook!
